Do you know, how are we being tracked during our online searches?

Let's assume that, I want to buy a DSLR camera and I started to search in google, regarding the price variations and to collect a list of available retailers near my location.  On the very next day, I started receiving ads from google about different DSLR cameras available in market with soothing discounts that convince us to buy the product. Every one of us might have came across such situation while surfing internet, Right?  Have you ever think about it...  How are they tracking us during our online searches ? What kind of information can they store from us?  Do you know how much amount of data you are providing to someone without your knowledge?

Yeah, so let me make you clear about this concept of storing visitors information.

To run a successful business, they have to know about the pain points and desires of their customers in order to convert all their leads into sales.  To do this, they need lot of data about their customers.  For this purpose of detailed analysis they started installing two snippets of codes in their website to track us.  They are :
  • Cookies
  • Tracking Pixels
Both of these are just a few lines of coding that are embedded with the website, in order to collect the user data.  So let's get even more deeper into these two by differentiating what they actually do.

COOKIES :
  • Cookies are defined as snippet of an HTTP code that sends the data of the user from the website we are visiting and stores the information on the user's computer by using the user's web browser
  • Cookies aren't harmful until we allow harmful website's cookies to store our data,  make sure that you allow cookies only from trusted sites you visit regularly
  • It enhances our searching process in our browser
  • You can also delete the cookies file in your computer if you wish to do so,  Make sure that you have set your browser to ask your permission before allowing a cookie to store your information

TRACKING PIXELS :

  • Tracking Pixels are same like cookies which are embedded into website by the owner of the site for the purpose of collecting the user's data
  • The main difference between a cookie and a tracking pixel is that, cookie stores its information in the user's computer whereas the tracking pixels stores the user's data in the web server
  • We all know the measuring unit for the image size is "Pixels".  It is a 1 X 1 graphic pixel that are used to track the traffic for a website, how the user behaves for a product, how many conversions are being done and more on
User's data are being collected, mainly for better understanding of their business.  Through this analysis, the site owner can understand which area they have improve to reduce the pain points of the customers and they could benefit by converting more leads into sales.
